Even at a young age, before children enter school, it is important to start introducing to them math concepts, like counting. They will already start naturally learning from their environment. Take the opportunity to use healthy food to teach about math. Along with counting everyday objects, use healthy food images, toys, and actual food. This way your child generally has exposure to healthy options in their environment. Having exposure to different foods helps them be more accepting of trying new foods. An example might be having a banana for a snack. Cut the banana into pieces and count them out together with your child. You could use MyPlate and the 5 food groups to start! Learn more about the five food groups in this tipsheet that is available in English and Spanish.
